To See Clearly

Time to read:

1–2 minutes
The bridge of my nose that holds them up
Guides my eyes from something out of reach
To right in front of my eyes.
How wonderful these things are, this object
That makes everything from fuzzy to bright,
That adorns my face, that changes my perspective,
Could also guide me to the wrong place.
The same thing that could help me see
could also choke me.
The frames of the glasses bent in strange shapes
Creating a spiral staircase into my mind,
Trapping me within its metal frame.
The glass made the outside view
clear, but I could never

I was told never to leave them out,
“It could start a fire,” they said. It could harm and hurt,
But a fire inside of me, or a spark on the outside?
Outside of this cage that twists and turns around my
Fate? I can only see it from afar, that spark dancing
In the distance, exactly out of reach, taunting and tormenting
While I sit here trapped.
The sun shining through those glass pieces would warm,
And what once brought warmth
Would heat when it reflected from the glass,
Burning me, urging me
To do something.

All I do is wait and look out of this metal cage,
Windows taunting me with the outside world. If I
Make myself smaller, I could stay here forever.

As I lie here strangled by these metal frames
sinking into the depths, I call my mind,
Those giant pillars of metal call to me.
The murky outlines of shapes and letters,
Are distraught by the very thing that is supposed to help
Me see. But when my view
Changes focus, those metal bars
Can be pushed, pulled, pondered
Into something more.

I don’t make myself small, but
Move the boundaries of my mind,
Change the metal and glass into something of beauty.
Metal bars are lifted and stretched,
The cage that once surrounded me is now a home.
A box that doesn’t harm or hurt, but cultivates life.
It changes the way I see clearly.
